Aland, the nation surrounded by the Baltic

Category: Travel Chronicle
Location: Mariehamn ( Finland )

Åland is a little Swedish-speaking island-nation located in the Baltic sea, between the main ports of Åbo / Turku and Stockholm. Although it's administratively part of Finland, their inhabitants enjoy a huge degree of autonomy.

Ålanders take advantage of their special status and location. Being their main economic strengths: shipping, trade and tourism. Benefited with a low taxation, the island is used as HQ for most of the website based companies and big Nordic shipping companies.

The sense of nation is strong, but in a peaceful way. In few nations you can find kids playing in front of their parliaments.

Being a little territory with almost no roads don't dwindle their passion for classic vehicles, shared with their big brother Sweden.
